Qiao Feng is the charismatic chief of the Beggars' Sect who possesses strong leadership qualities and exceptional prowess in martial arts. He falls from grace after he is revealed to be a Khitan, and after he is wrongly accused of murdering some fellow martial artists. He becomes an outcast of the wulin (martial artists' community) of the Han Chinese-dominated Song Empire, which is at war with the Khitan-led Liao Empire. Qiao Feng's relations with the Han Chinese martial artists worsen due to the Song–Liao conflict, and also because he is now seen as a murderer and a threat to the wulin. He is forced to sever ties with them and engage them in a one-against-several battle, in which he single-handedly kills many opponents, including some of his old friends and acquaintances. Qiao Feng leaves to verify the claims that he is a Khitan and investigate the murders. He is accompanied by Azhu, who loves him and stands by him when the wulin turns against him. After a long journey in disguise, he concludes that he is indeed a Khitan and assumes his ancestral name "Xiao Feng". In tracking down a mysterious "Leading Big Brother", whom he believes is responsible for the murders and his parents' deaths, he mistakenly thinks that Duan Zhengchun is the "Leading Big Brother", and challenges him to a one-on-one fight. However, the event turns into a tragedy when Azhu disguises herself as Duan Zhengchun and allows Xiao Feng to kill her. It is too late when Xiao Feng realises his mistake. Before dying, Azhu tells Xiao Feng that Duan Zhengchun is actually her father, and she hopes that her sacrifice would satisfy his thirst for vengeance. Regretful, Xiao Feng leaves Song territory with Azi, Azhu's younger sister, whom he had promised to take care of. Azi has a strong crush on him but he does not reciprocate due to his undying love for her sister. They wander far into northeastern China and settle down among the Jurchen tribes. By chance, Xiao Feng encounters the Liao emperor, Yelü Hongji, becomes sworn brothers with him, and helps him suppress a rebellion. In return, Yelü Hongji makes Xiao Feng a powerful noble and gives him a large princely estate. Xiao Feng returns to the Song Empire later to attend a wulin gathering at Shaolin Monastery, where he combines forces with Duan Yu and Xuzhu to overcome their foes. At Shaolin, the truths behind all the murders are revealed and the guilty parties receive their just deserts; Xiao Feng also successfully proves his innocence and reconciles with the wulin before returning to Liao. Towards the end of the novel, Yelü Hongji plans to invade the Song Empire and wants Xiao Feng to support him, but Xiao refuses and attempts to dissuade him to prevent bloodshed. The Liao emperor imprisons Xiao Feng and decides to proceed with the campaign. In the meantime, Azi escapes from Liao and seeks help from Duan Yu, Xuzhu and their allies. Impressed by Xiao Feng's righteousness, they manage to rally martial artists from throughout the wulin to join them in rescuing Xiao Feng. Even though the mission is successful, they are ultimately outnumbered and trapped by Liao forces at Yanmen Pass. Xiao Feng takes Yelü Hongji hostage and forces him to promise that there will be no war between Song and Liao for as long as he lives. He then commits suicide while Azi follows suit.
Toan Ki (Duan Yu 段誉) seorang pangeran dari Negeri Tayli, anak resmi Toan Cing-sun, namun sesungguhnya merupakan anak haram Toan Yan-king dan Si Pek-hong.
Duan Yu is a young and naïve prince of the Dali Kingdom. His reverence for Buddhist teachings and disdain for bloodshed prompt him to defy his family's tradition of practising martial arts. He runs away from home when his father, Duan Zhengchun, tries to force him to learn martial arts. For the sake of survival, he ends up mastering three powerful skills and becomes a formidable martial artist. In addition, he acquires immunity to poison after accidentally consuming the Zhuha, a venomous toad. During his adventures, he encounters five young maidens – Zhong Ling, Mu Wanqing, Wang Yuyan, Azhu and Azi – and becomes romantically involved with the first three. However, at different points in the novel, each of them is revealed to be actually his half-sister due to Duan Zhengchun's secret affairs with other women in the past. Of these maidens, he is extremely obsessed with Wang Yuyan, who resembles a statue of a fairy-like lady he chanced upon before. He relentlessly tries to win her heart but she does not reciprocate because she has a crush on her cousin, Murong Fu. Towards the end of the novel, in a tragic twist of events, Duan Yu finds out that he is actually not Duan Zhengchun's biological son. And this allowed him to marry all three love he had (the opinions that time allowed marriage with cousins) . In the original ending, his love life ends on a happy note when Wang finally realises that he truly loves her and decides to marry him. But after it was published, the book received disfavor from large number of readers, as this left Mu Wanqing, one of the most striking character a minor position in the whole story. In the latest revision of the novel, Duan Yu and Wang Yuyan's romance is marred by a series of incidents which eventually cause them to be separated and Duan Yu ends up with Mu Wan Qing and Zhong Ling

Xuzhu is a monk from the Shaolin Sect who is described to have a kind-hearted and submissive personality. He strongly believes in following the Buddhist code of conduct and refuses to break it even when he faces life-threatening situations. He follows his elders to a meeting, which marks the start of his adventures. By coincidence and sheer luck, he breaks a Go formation and inherits the powers of Wuyazi, the leader of the Carefree Sect. Later, he encounters Tianshan Tonglao, learns martial arts from her, and eventually succeeds her as the ruler of Lingjiu Palace, which commands allegiance from several smaller martial arts sects. Feeling overwhelmed by the sudden influx of heavy responsibilities and a major leap in martial prowess, Xuzhu desires to detach himself from these duties and return to his former monastic life. However, he is unable to wrench himself free from the various tribulations and dangers that lie ahead. He is no longer regarded as a Shaolin monk and has no choice but to accept his fate. He also has a pitiful parentage: he is actually the illegitimate son of Xuanci, the abbot of Shaolin, and Ye Erniang, one of the "Four Evils". His reunion with his parents is fated to be the first and also the last. Later, by chance again, he becomes the prince consort of Western Xia due to his previous affair with Princess Yinchuan, to whom he is deeply in love and happily married.
Ong Giokyan (Wang Yuyan 王语嫣) anak haram Toan Cing-sun dan Li Cing-lok
is the daughter of Duan Zhengchun and Li Qingluo. She is described as a beautiful and flawless young maiden independent of all worldly traits. She has a crush on her cousin, Murong Fu. She memorises martial arts manuals in the hope of helping Murong Fu perfect his skills and hence win his affection, but he does not appreciate her help and treats her coldly. She is able to identify various types of martial arts simply by observation, even though she does not practise the skills in the manuals she read. Duan Yu falls in love with her on first sight due to her resemblance to "Fairy Sister", a statue of her grand-aunt he chanced upon. He starts following her everywhere she goes and incurs the annoyance of Murong Fu's followers. Although initially impassive towards Duan Yu, she slowly warms up to him after he saved her on a few occasions. After seeing how Murong Fu has become so obsessed with restoring his kingdom that he wants to compete for the hand-in-marriage of the Western Xia princess, she feels disappointed with him and attempts suicide but survives. Duan Yu confronts Murong Fu and tells him he will also fight for the princess's hand-in-marriage, so as to force Murong to return to Wang Yuyan. Murong Fu turns furious and knocks Duan Yu into a well. By then, Wang Yuyan realises that Murong Fu has become insane and she throws herself into the well to join Duan Yu. Wang and Duan survive the fall, confess their love to each other, and eventually leave safely. Wang Yuyan discovers later that she is Duan Zhengchun's daughter – effectively making her Duan Yu's half-sister – and feels heartbroken because she cannot be with Duan Yu anymore. Duan Yu later tells her that they can still be together because they are ultimately distant cousins since his biological father turns out to be Duan Yanqing instead of Duan Zhengchun.
Acu (Azhu 阿朱) anak haram Toan Cing-sun dan Wi Sing-tiok
is the elder daughter of Duan Zhengchun and Ruan Xingzhu. She is very skilled in the art of disguise and is initially a servant of the Murong family. She meets Duan Yu and helps him escape from Jiumozhi. She once disguised Duan Yu and herself as Murong Fu and Xiao Feng respectively, as part of a plan to save some members of the Beggars' Sect who were captured by Western Xia soldiers. She later disguises herself as a monk and infiltrates Shaolin to steal some martial arts manuals for Murong Fu. Xiao Feng witnesses the act and forces her to hide with him behind a giant statue. They are eventually discovered. In the ensuing fight, she is seriously injured by Xuanci, but Xiao Feng saves her and they escape. When inspecting her wounds, he finds out that she is a woman and uses his inner energy to preserve her life and cares for her while she is wounded. During this time, Azhu develops romantic feelings for Xiao Feng. Xiao Feng brings her to Xue Muhua, the only person capable of healing her, and manages to convince him to do so. After her wounds are healed, Azhu waits for Xiao Feng five days and five nights on the road and tells him her wish to accompany him forever. Xiao Feng is touched by her dedication and reciprocates her feelings for him. Although they experience a calm and peaceful life in the wilderness while travelling, Xiao is unable to let go of his desire to find out the identity of "Leading Big Brother", the person who killed his parents. They return to Song territory, where Azhu volunteers to help Xiao trick Kang Min into revealing who "Leading Big Brother" is. However, Kang Min quickly sees through the disguise and misleads them into thinking that the "Leading Big Brother" is Duan Zhengchun. Xiao Feng challenges Duan Zhengchun to a duel. Before the duel, Azhu finds out that she is actually Duan Zhengchun's daughter, and that her younger sister is Azi. She disguises herself as Duan Zhengchun to prevent a conflict between her lover and father, and allows Xiao Feng to kill her. It is too late when Xiao realises his mistake. Before dying, Azhu reveals the truth to Xiao and makes him promise her that he will take care of Azi.
Aci (Azi 阿紫) saudara kembar Acu
is Azhu's younger sister and an apprentice of Ding Chunqiu. Much like everyone else in the Xingxiu Sect, she is sadistic and cruel, and takes pleasure in torturing and mutilating anyone who offends her. She is considered a traitor to the Xingxiu Sect because she stole the shenmu wangding (神木王鼎), a prized treasure of the sect, and fled with it. In the latest edition of the novel, her reason for doing so was because Ding Chunqiu noticed her growing beauty and started making inappropriate advances on her. You Tanzhi, who is also attracted by her beauty, willingly succumbs to her sadistic "games" to amuse her. He even offers his eyes to her after she is blinded by Ding Chunqiu. However, she has a crush on Xiao Feng and does not care about You Tanzhi. She often taunts Xiao Feng with her sister's dying words whenever he refuses to do anything for her. She becomes increasingly jealous of how irreplaceable her dead sister is in Xiao Feng's heart. When Xiao Feng refuses to help Yelü Hongji attack the Song Empire, the Liao emperor sends his concubine to approach Azi and trick her into spiking Xiao Feng's wine with a "love potion". While escaping from Liao with Azi, Xiao Feng is suddenly seized with fatigue because the "love potion" is actually a poison that will temporarily weaken him. While Xiao Feng is captured and imprisoned by Liao forces, Azi manages to escape and seek help from Duan Yu and the others to save Xiao. Although Xiao Feng is rescued, he takes Yelü Hongji hostage, makes the Liao emperor swear never to wage war against the Song Empire for as long as he lives, and then commits suicide. Azi realises that she cannot live without Xiao Feng and follows suit after he takes his own life.
Bok Wan-jing (Mu Wanqing 木婉清) anak haram Toan Cing-sun dengan Cin Ang-bian
is the daughter of Duan Zhengchun and Qin Hongmian. She is forced to follow a rule established by her martial arts master: If any man sees her face, she must either marry or kill him. Because of this reason, she normally wears a mask or veil. She is pursued by Yue Laosan, who is angry that she killed his apprentice, who saw her face. Duan Yu gets involved in this matter, and she takes him along with her as she escapes. Despite her harsh treatment towards him, he tries to help her and she falls in love with him. When Yue Laosan catches up with them, she reveals her face to Duan Yu and forces him to either marry her or die with her. He chooses the former option. She leaves him in anguish after they are revealed to be actually half-siblings. She meets Duan Yanqing, who tricks her and Duan Yu into consuming aphrodisiac, because he wants them to commit incest and disgrace the Duan family. However, Duan Zhengchun's men dig a secret tunnel leading to the room where she is held captive, rescue her, and replace her with Zhong Ling. She appears again in a later chapter when the protagonists are in Western Xia.
Ciong Ling (Zhong Ling 钟灵) anak resmi Ciong Ban-siu, namun sesungguhnya anak haram Toan Cing-sun dan Kam Po-po
is the daughter of Duan Zhengchun and Gan Baobao. She meets Duan Yu while he is attempting to defuse a conflict between two rival sects. She is captured and held hostage by one of the sects' leaders after he is bitten by her pet, the Lightning Squirrel, whose bite is poisonous and fatal. She is rescued by Duan Yu and Mu Wanqing later. Although she is also in love with Duan Yu, she gives up after learning that he is her half-brother. She appears again in a later chapter to take care of Duan Yu after he is wounded by Jiumozhi.

Toan Cingbeng (Duan Zhengming 段正明) raja, kakak dari Toan Cing-sun
(posthumous name Baoding) was the 14th ruler of the Dali Kingdom. In 1081, the regent Gao Zhisheng forced Duan Zhengming's predecessor, Duan Shouhui, to abdicate and replaced him with Duan Zhengming. In 1094, Gao Shengtai, Gao Zhisheng's son, forced Duan Zhengming to relinquish the throne to him and renamed the Dali Kingdom to "Dazhong Kingdom". Gao Shengtai ruled briefly until his death in 1096, after which the throne was returned to the Duan family – Duan Zhengming's younger brother, Duan Zhengchun, became the new ruler and restored the kingdom's former name
Toan Cingsun (Duan Zhengchun 段正淳) adik Toan Cingbeng, pangeran mahkota karena Toan Cing-beng tak mempunyai anak
is a prince of Dali and Duan Zhengming's younger brother. Notorious for his philandering ways, he conceives several illegitimate daughters with different women in his younger days. Ironically, three of his daughters become romantically involved with Duan Yu, whom he raises as his son without knowing that Duan Yu was actually conceived out of a past illicit affair between his wife, Dao Baifeng, and Duan Yanqing, his distant cousin and future nemesis. He succeeds his brother as the king of Dali after the latter abdicated and became a monk. While travelling around, he is confronted on different occasions by Duan Yanqing, who attempts to force him to hand over his throne. He commits suicide to join his lovers after they are killed by Murong Fu.
